ML Light Kit

The ML Light Kit for Cinema 4D and Redshift are tools designed to render and animate moving lights easier, faster and more realistically. Built for illustrators and concept artists, these tools are great for developing visuals for concerts, events, theater or any project requiring precise visual lighting. The ML Lights are non-brand specific instruments that look great at any viewing angle, and keep the polygon count low. Custom user controls make focusing, coloring and adding gobos right at your fingertips. The system is designed with simplicity in mind to speed up your workflow.

It's not just that LightKit renders instantly, looks amazing, and is easy to control in every way imaginable. But beyond that, it's just fun to explore Evan's techniques and learn for future projects. Great stuff.

FAQ

What software versions do I need to run this?

Redshift 3.6.02 or higher is needed. Any modern version of Cinema 4D that can run this version of Redshift should work. We tested back to Cinema 4d R25 with no issues.

How do I install the Kit?

The ML Light Kit is not a plugin - these are native Cinema 4D files that contain the lights and tools. You just copy and paste what you need into your working scene files.

Is this Previz software?

No. These tools are meant to help you with illustrations, concept art and animations inside of Cinema 4d. They speed up your workflow and make “writing cues” easier, but they exist inside the normal parameters of Cinema 4d renders.

Can I use other render engines?

The kit is currently only built for Redshift, with it’s lights and materials. If there is enough interest in other render engines we will explore this in the future. Please reach out to me and let me know what other engines you are interested in for future consideration.

Why can’t I see my light beams in my scenes?

Volumetrics for the lights require a Redshift Environment in your scene. There is one in each ML light file that you can copy and paste into your working scenes.

Can you make me a Sharpie or a Megapointe or a xxxx light?

The kit is specifically designed to be non-brand specific and since they are mostly in the dark, this will work for the majority of use cases. I am staying away from making specific brand fixtures, but you can make them yourself! I have a tutorial on rigging moving lights on my YouTube page.

How powerful a computer do I need to run the light kit?

This is very subjective based on the complexity of your scene and the amount of lights you put in. The units use standard Redshift lights and materials and the controls use Cinema 4d Xpresso in the background - so the kit shouldn’t add much more strain to your system then working in vanilla Cinema 4d and Redshift. For reference, all the training videos and demos are made on a PC with 128MB of RAM and a RTX 4090 GPU.

What’s the difference between the ML 01 and the ML 02?

The ML 01 uses an Area light to create a visible lens and give a good flare, but this light won’t let you use gobos. The ML 02 uses a Spotlight which lets you use gobos, but doesn’t have a visible lens. It seemed easiest to break them into different lights for different use cases. I am working towards a single uber-unit that can do it all in future releases, but the Redshift technology isn’t there yet.

What is Gumroad?

Gumroad is a secure third party e-commerce platform for selling digital products online.

Are you making more lights?

Yes! I am actively working on more fixtures and other tools for future releases.
